Innovations and technology trends in poultry farming
Comparison of surveys from 2023/24 and 2025
The graphics of the month show the responses of agricultural businesses in Germany to the question of which areas they hope to see new innovations and technology trends in. This time, the results of the current survey from spring 2025 in the first graphic are compared with the results of the survey from winter 2023/24 in the second graphic.
- While demand-driven feeding was still the top priority in winter 2023/24, improving animal health has now moved to the top of the list.
- With bird migration and the increased incidence of bird flu, the issues of biosecurity and hygiene continue to be of great importance. This is also reflected in the graphs: while biosecurity and hygiene ranked sixth with a score of 2.09 in the last survey in winter 2023/24, this time they were rated as significantly more important by respondents and ranked second in terms of desired innovations with a score of 1.75.
- Even though the sample of respondents with a focus on poultry is highly variable, the figures show a significant increase in the importance of the topic.
- Improvements in housing systems and animal welfare, as well as improvements in work organization, remain at the top of the list for farmers when it comes to the areas in which they hope to see innovation.
Additional Info
Biosecurity and hygiene are currently a high priority for poultry farmers, as avian influenza is rampant.
We spoke with Prof. Timm Harder from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute to find out whether avian influenza is particularly aggressive this year.
We have also compiled a list of measures that poultry farmers can take to protect their flocks as effectively as possible.
