Anticipated innovations in poultry production
Whether eggs or meat, poultry is popular with consumers when it's on the plate. On the other hand, however, poultry farming is also the subject of controversial social debate. In the latest “Graphic of the Month” from DLG-Agrifuture Insights, we present the innovations the industry is hoping for based on the results of the 2023/24 winter survey.
As part of the current Agrifuture Insights study, participants were asked from November 2023 to the beginning of January 2024 what innovations they hope to see in the poultry sector. Demand-oriented feeding to improve the nutrient balance and animal health is a particular focus.
As it simultaneously reduces the discharge of nutrients via farm manure, improves animal health and ensures performance, the entire poultry sector has particularly high hopes regarding demand-oriented feeding.
Further important innovations are increasingly expected in the improvement of stable climate. Fueled by the emerging climate changes, avoiding of heat stress is becoming increasingly important internationally, but also in Germany. Added to this is the need for improvements in the areas of biosecurity and hygiene, which play an important role across all animal species in view of the continuing spread of animal diseases.
In addition, the people surveyed are hoping for innovations in the improvement of work organization in order to reduce the time required for livestock management. As it has already been discussed intensively at the DLG-Unternehmertage conference, reliable employees are becoming increasingly difficult to find. As additionally the bureaucratic burden continues to increase, farm managers need to think carefully about who can be deployed in which position. In addition to applications in the field of animal health and welfare, digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence can provide solutions in this area in particular.
Many of these innovations can be seen at EuroTier 2024 in Hanover in November. www.eurotier.com
