DLG facilitates involvement of farmers and aquafarmers in a research project boosting European protein diversification
The German Agricultural Society (DLG) is an official partner of the recently launched EU Horizon EPIC-SHIFT project ("Securing Holistic and Impactful Food Systems Transformation with Novel Foods based on alternative proteins"), underscoring its commitment to fostering a sustainable and equitable future for European agri-food systems.
The project, which held its kick-off meeting in Lund, Sweden, in early May, aims to comprehensively assess the potential of novel foods based on alternative proteins as viable alternative rich in protein and a potential option for European consumers to choose from. Within the EPIC-SHIFT consortium, the DLG will play a crucial role in ensuring involvement of food system actors, particularly livestock farmers and aquafarmers, as the novel food sector evolves. The objective of this vital activities is to systematically identify the ways in which novel foods based on alternative proteins may impact European livestock farmers and aquafarmers. The DLG will actively work in collaboration with project partners from Sweden, Greece , and Italy to engage with these sectors to understand their perspectives, concerns, and potential opportunities within the emerging alternative protein value chains, including the utilization of co-products.
"The DLG recognizes the transformative potential of novel foods based on alternative proteins and the importance of ensuring that this evolution occurs in a way that is fair and beneficial for our established agricultural and aquaculture communities," says [Nils Borchard, head of research and innovation at DLG]. "Through our work within the EPIC-SHIFT project, we are committed to actively listening to farmers and aquafarmers, understanding their concerns, and collaboratively exploring new opportunities for a sustainable and resilient food system."
The DLG's involvement in EPIC-SHIFT underscores its long-standing commitment to supporting agricultural innovation and fostering dialogue within the food sector. By actively engaging with farmers and aquafarmers, the DLG aims to ensure that their voices are heard, and their needs are considered as the landscape of protein production evolves.
About EPIC-SHIFT("Securing Holistic and Impactful Food Systems Transformation with Novel Foods based on Alternative Proteins"): It is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project that commenced on November 1, 2024, and runs until October 31, 2027. The project aims to provide a thorough and independent assessment of the viability and sustainability of novel alternative proteins fostering a just transition and resilience within the European food system. The consortium comprises 20 partners.
EPIC-SHIFT to Support EU Food System Resilience
In the context of rising demand for protein across the EU, and food systems that are still unsustainable, dietary shifts toward the inclusion of novel foods based on alternative protein sources —alongside existing ones—present a major opportunity. These shifts can help address current challenges while creating value for different stakeholders within the food sector.
Novel foods based on alternative proteins—including those derived from insects, fungi, bacteria, algae, and agricultural or aquacultural by-products—can contribute to meeting growing protein needs alongside currently available sources, while reducing pressure on the environment and climate. This could play a pivotal role in strengthening the EU’s protein strategy and long-term food security. However, knowledge regarding the environmental, economic, and social impacts of the widespread production, provision, and consumption of novel foods based on alternative proteins is still limited. This knowledge gap has yet to be fully integrated into a holistic view of the food system. The EPIC-SHIFT project aims to address this challenge by conducting in-depth systems analysis through a unique partnership of leading universities, research institutes, startups, recognised food businesses, accelerators, independent consultants, international innovation initiatives, farmers, and consumer associations.
