Anticipated innovations in decentralized energy production
The energy transition is in full swing and the agricultural sector is right in the middle of it. In the current “Chart of the Month” from DLG-Agrifuture Insights, we present the innovations the industry is hoping for based on the results of the 2023/24 winter survey.
As part of the current Agrifuture Insights study, participants were asked from November 2023 to the beginning of January 2024 what innovations they hope to see in the field of decentralized energy production.
Ground-mounted photovoltaics, energy storage and the flexibilization of biogas plants are currently the focus here.
With regard to the topic of photovoltaics (PV), the focus is on several points at once. Interest in innovations for ground-mounted PV is not surprising, as many open spaces are currently used for photovoltaics. However, there is also the fact that subsidies for PV systems on roof surfaces will no longer be available under the EEG. This increases the interest in on-farm-usage of the electricity generated, especially when electricity costs are high. On the one hand, the installation of (larger) storage systems naturally makes sense, but there is also hope in intelligent technologies for storing electricity. For livestock farms in particular, which are increasingly producing their own electricity, it will be interesting to make the PV system usable for their own operations. Technologies and systems that enable the intelligent networking and use of electricity and thus make it possible to use as much of the self-generated electricity as possible are of interest.
For many biogas plants, the EEG subsidy will expire in the next few years. These companies can currently apply for an extension of the subsidy. The condition for this is the flexibilization of the biogas plants. Improving the efficiency of engines as well as the capacities of storage facilities play a role in this flexibilization. Even if these have already developed further, there is still significant potential here. Accordingly, the respondents are hoping for innovations in the area of storage in particular.
DLG-Agrifuture Insights – a comprehensive view on agricultural development
DLG-Agrifuture Insights is the DLG knowledge brand and platform for international trend analyses in the agricultural sector. It examines the business environment in agriculture in Germany and worldwide. For this purpose, farmers and people from agribusiness, science and consulting are surveyed annually on their assessments of the economic situation and development of agricultural businesses, as well as technology trends and innovations in the individual business sectors. A total of 3,336 people took part in the current survey in winter 2023/24, around 1,300 of them from abroad.
