Compliance with high standards of animal fairness is of great importance for ensuring the well-being and health of animals.
More animal fairness for more animal welfare is necessary. But what is fair to animals? The DLG Committee for Animal Fairness has defined this term more precisely and is investigating forms of animal farming that are fair to animals. The animals are always at the centre of attention.
The nationwide Fokus Tierwohl network was founded to sustainably strengthen livestock farmers in Germany and support them in prioritising animal welfare, environmental protection, production quality and market orientation. The aim of the joint project is to improve the transfer of knowledge into practice in order to make pig, poultry and cattle farms in Germany fit for the future in terms of animal welfare, environmentally friendly and sustainable livestock farming.
The DLG programme promotes animal-friendly husbandry of dairy cows. It contains requirements for space availability, contact with the outdoor climate, high-quality feed, employment material and health care and many other important requirements for the management of animal-friendly husbandry. The increased animal welfare is demonstrated with four different awards.
The "Animal Welfare Award" is presented by the DLG together with the bpt (Bundesverband praktizierender Tierärzte e. V. - German Federal Association of Practising Veterinarians). The prerequisite is winning a gold or silver medal in the "EuroTier Innovation Award" competition for a product that particularly fulfils the requirements for a higher animal welfare standard.
The DLG Committee for Animal Fairness
The DLG Committee for Animal Welfare advises the Technical Committees for Housing Facilities (Cattle and Pigs) on animal welfare issues. It also organises events as part of the DLG Winter Conference and positions itself on issues relating to animal welfare and animal protection in agricultural animal husbandry.
