Planting a Forest – An Investment in the Future

Planting new forests is one of the most important measures for counteracting the consequences of climate change, promoting biodiversity and ensuring valuable ecosystem services. But planting trees is much more than just putting seedlings in the ground – it is a complex process that requires careful planning and professional implementation.

What does it take to plant a forest?

For a new forest to grow successfully, it needs more than just the trees themselves. Important elements of successful reforestation are:

Area preparation

The area must be carefully prepared to provide the seedlings with optimal conditions; this includes, for example, clearing the planting area.

Trained staff

Expert foresters are crucial to planning the planting and then planting and caring for the seedlings properly.

Protection against game browsing

Young trees are susceptible to browsing by wild animals. Protective measures such as fences or special protective devices around the seedlings are therefore essential.

Maintenance

In the first few years, the area must be mowed 1-3 times a year to protect the young trees from being overgrown by grasses or competing plants.

How many trees are there on one hectare?

The number of trees planted per hectare depends on the purpose of the afforestation, the tree species and the planting method. It usually makes sense to plant between 2,000 and 7,000 trees per hectare (10,000 m²). A denser population increases the stability and biodiversity of the forest but also requires higher investments.

How much does it cost to plant a forest?

The costs for planting a hectare of forest vary depending on the tree species, site conditions and the necessary protective measures. On average, the costs amount to €15,000 to €25,000 per hectare.

Why is it important to plant forests?

Planting new forests is a long-term investment in the future. Forests make an invaluable contribution to climate protection by capturing carbon, producing oxygen and regulating the water supply. They provide a habitat for countless animal and plant species and help to stabilise our ecosystems.

Every newly planted tree helps to create the forests of tomorrow – forests that are resilient to the challenges of climate change and provide a basis for life for us all.
