Türkiye’s first event dedicated only to tomatoes

Tomato Days Türkiye, first field fair for tomato cultivation and processing – held in Bursa, Karacabey from 27-29 July – 35 exhibitors – trial plots, stands and equipment on 5.5 hectares

DLG Fuarcılık, a subsidiary of DLG International launched a new field event, “Tomato Days Türkiye” in Bursa, Karacabey. Located in northwest Türkiye, south of Istanbul in the hub of tomato cultivation, the new field event is dedicated to both the cultivation and processing of tomatoes.

The field venue handpicked for Tomato Days Türkiye allowed exhibitors to present their crops in trial plots with products and services on open air stands that was accompanied by equipment demonstrations. Hold on nearly 6 hectares, the event is the first event in Türkiye to not only demonstrate tomatoes in the field but also to unite the entire supply chain, from field, processing to retailing.

The word’s tomato production has increased by 13 percent in the last ten years, driven by population growth and increased demand for processed tomatoes. As the world’s third largest producer of tomatoes, producing 13 million tons on 181,879 hectares in 2020, and a world top-ten exporter of fresh tomatoes and tomato paste, Türkiye has accumulated significant skills and experience in both cultivation and processing.

Leading companies on board

Leading manufacturers of tomato seeds, plant protection and plant nutrition presented products and services on 400 sqm of plots. The event delivered practical knowledge on most aspects of modern tomato cultivation, including production techniques.

At the opening ceremony the following speakers have addressed words to the audience: Mr Bernd Koch, Managing Director of DLG International, Undersecretary for Food and Agriculture, Mr Thomas Huber from the German Embassy, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Bursa Municipality Representative, Mr Erdoğan Ceylan and Karacabey Mayor, Mr Ali Özkan as well the Managing Director of DLG Fuarcılık, Mr Onur Kiraz.
“We are happy to launch Tomato Days Türkiye with more than 35 exhibitors on 5.5 hectares. Tomato Days Türkiye  is the new platform to exchange know-how and information both technical and commercial for tomato growers. Over 50 different tomato varieties were planted on trial plots.

Many of the exhibitors presented their methodologies and varieties in the field. Tomato growers learned about the crop and exchanged knowledge with experts. Equipment displays, such as Tomato harvesting machines and tractors were organised.
