After two years of Corona break, the annual ICAR Conference took place again this year from May 28 to June 3. Host country Canada invited the members and experts of the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) to Montréal. On the day before the conference, the subcommittees and working groups met in order to present and discuss their fields of work in technical sessions and workshops to the 300 participants on the following four conference days.
The ICAR Subcommittee Animal Identification also met for two working sessions and to organize a Technical Session "New developments and future possibilities" during the conference in Montréal. Also present was DLG staff member Susanne Gäckler, who was in charge of testing eartags, injectables and foot tag transponders at the Groß-Umstadt Test Center from 2009 until the end of 2019 and has continued to provide technical support to the team in Groß-Umstadt since her move to the Agriculture Technical Center in 2020. The DLG Test Center is DAkkS accredited for testing animal tags and recognized as an international ICAR laboratory. On behalf of ICAR, it carries out the international approval tests required by ISO standards for electronic animal identifiers as well as the ICAR certification tests for conventional ear tags and transponders, which focus on functionality in the husbandry environment and animal welfare.
Due to her many years of expertise, Susanne Gäckler has been intensively supporting the ICAR Subcommittee as a "Technical expert" in the development and implementation of the ICAR testing and certification programs for animal license plates since 2011. For her outstanding commitment over many years, she was already awarded the "Outstanding Contribution Award" by ICAR in 2020. Due to the pandemic, this award could not be presented until now. At this year's ICAR General Assembly in Montréal, the award was presented. ICAR President Daniel Lefebvre and CEO Martin Burke ceremoniously presented the award with a laudatory speech in front of the assembled ICAR members.
We are happy with Susanne Gäckler and congratulate her on this international award!
