DLG e.V. - DLG-Agrifuture Insights Report South Africa - Dairy Farming 2019

Country report South Africa 2019 – Dairy Cattle Farming

Milk farmers primarily intend to invest in milking and feeding technology and to lower operating costs with long-lived cows and increased automation

South African milk producers see breeding for longevity, milk marketing and high feed quality as decisive factors for the success of their farms. They are also extremely interested in innovations that provide for greater work efficiency and animal welfare.

DLG-Agrifuture Insights also shows what additional focus farmers intend to set in their farm management and which other measures they intend to take to make their farms fit for the future.

South African dairy cattle farmers are also open to digitalisation. One-third is interested in sensor systems for animal monitoring. These kinds of systems are used, for example, for heat identification or to detect lame animals.
