Farmers in South Africa are satisfied with the current economic situation. With this assessment farmers are defying the current drought, which directly affects the cash crop producers with lower yields, the dairy cattle farmers with reduced feed yields and the poultry farmers with rising feed costs.
The poultry and dairy cattle farmers are continuing to grow, as in particular the domestic consumption of poultry meat and milk is increasing. Although both markets are characterised by heavy import competition, the farmers surveyed intend to increase their competitiveness with investments and the modernisation of their production.
