To solve the conflict of interest between animal welfare and environmental protection, new concepts of barns are a discussed as a possible solution. The current "Graphic of the Month" by DLG-Agrifuture Insights shows how pig farmers in five countries assess their feasibility.

For example, between 50 and 60 percent of pig farmers surveyed think that they can solve the conflict of interest between animal welfare and environment with new pen concepts. But in the majority pig producers think, that they cannot operate animal welfare pens economically.

Only pig producers from the Netherlands have a different opinion: They assess animal welfare pens as a bearing alternative. The experiences with economic successful animal welfare programs result in this positive valuation.

More than 20 percent of the pig farmers surveyed in Germany and the Netherlands agree in the opinion that animal welfare pens will not be approved by public authorities – in both countries, public authorities are crucial to reach more animal welfare.
