Migration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)

Released in any type of combustion process or by abrasion, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are omnipresent contaminants in the environment. Some variants of PAH are considered carcinogenic. In the equestrian market, they are often used as softeners, for example in stable flooring, saddle pads or feeders.

Consequently, there are good reasons to analyse these products for migration of PAHs. Applying strict limit levels, the experts at the DLG Test Center Technology and Farm Inputs assess horse accessories for PAH release into the environment and award the DLG quality seal if the products are found to meet the standards “PAH level considered harmless“.

Test criteria

  • Annual quality controls
  • Lab analyses: Identifying the total PAH level and PAH migration levels (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons)
  • Compliance tests for the following maximum migration levels: 5 μg/dm² of the sum of 8 EU REACH-PAH and 10 μg/dm² of the sum of 15+1 EU SCF-PAH
