Hannover, Germany, November 14, 2016 - During the international trade fair for innovative energy supply, EnergyDecentral 2016, the DLG (German Agricultural Society) announced the winners of the Innovation Award EnergyDecentral 2016: One innovation was awarded a gold medal and four innovations received a silver medal. DLG president Carl-Albrecht Bartmer presented the medals along with the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Maria Flachsbarth, at the formal opening of the event at Hanover on 14 November 2016.

The Austrian flue gas control act (BImSchV) requires the use of filters in biomass heating systems in the future. This means that most heating systems will have to be equipped with extra dust filters that are installed downstream from the boiler. Introducing the Biokompakt ECO 50 -150 E series biomass heater, Biokompakt Heiztechnik GmbH is the first manufacturer to offer an electrostatic filter with an automatic cleaning function. This filter is integrated within the boiler unit. Its cleaning efficiency is many times higher than what is required by the Austrian flue gas control act - a fact that has been verified and confirmed by independent institutions. Moreover, no extra space is required for installation and the electrostatic filter can be controlled and monitored by the existing electronic boiler control system. In addition, the electrostatic filter can be retrofitted to earlier Biokompakt systems built since 2004 - a great cost saver.

The Combibags were developed to provide an easy, quick and economical way of increasing gas holding volume or provide fermentation waste or slurry storage capacity. Combibags are containers which line and cover semi-landfill pits. These are usually square or rectangular. The innovative ‘Round Eco and Combibag’ by Wiefferink is the first circular cover on the market. A circular pit makes for easier agitation inside the digester and helps distribute the load inside the liquid tank. As a result, the storage tank can hold pressures of up to 10mbar, which compares with 1.5mbar in rectangular storage tanks. A circular form offers relatively higher volumes than a rectangular form and hence a larger gas holding capacity.

Digestate is chopped either by systems that are installed in the feeding system or more often by mobile systems that are sourced from composting machinery and equipment. These chopping systems are complex and expensive to buy and run. The ‘CutMaster module’ by Rasspe Systemtechnik is a chopping and spreading unit that is retrofitted to existing machines such as push-off trailers or compost spreaders. The new solution allows farmers to use existing mobile equipment to process the digestate before it is filled into the digester. The CutMaster is particularly appealing to large-scale and contracting operations and is very well suited for processing material that is available only occasionally and that would otherwise not be used for fermentation in a biogas plant.

Many field trials and lab tests have shown that gas yields of digestate that is rich in raw fibres may develop faster and levels increase moderately when the digestate is chopped. Chopping also makes these substrates easier to handle and agitate and it reduces those problems that are caused by foreign material. Yet, the drawback of such a chopping system is its high input requirement.

DisRuptor from Hugo Vogelsang Maschinenbau GmbH is a major advance from the company’s RotaCut system. Its key element is an adjustable chopping head which allows operators to adjust the chop length of the digestate without swapping the tools and thus to match the chop length to the requirements of the specific plant. A chopping system that allows operators to adjust the chop length is expected to offer substantial savings in energy input over chopping systems that are not adjustable.

Liquid-managed over-pressure and under-pressure safety devices for biogas plants have to be checked daily. It may be necessary to top up water and glycol, not least to prevent freezing during periods of severe frost. Despite this, such devices are occasionally unintentionally actuated due to faulty response pressures and unburned biomethane is then released.

The following criteria are critical for a product to earn a gold medal:

- Benefits to environment and energy use
- Benefits for work load and safety
Assessment criteria for EnergyDecentral 2016 Innovation Award in silver:
An EnergyDecentral innovation Silver Award is conferred on an innovation that has been enhanced to such an extent that a substantial improvement in its function and process can be expected from it. At the same time, it need not meet all the criteria applicable for a EnergyDecentral Innovation Gold Award. The following criteria apply for a Silver Medal:

- The work quality and operational reliability
